Learning outcomes

You analyse, assess and identify micro-organisms in microbiological samples using selective media, biochemical and molecular techniques, and various staining methods as part of your microbiological laboratory skills.

You will carry out antibiotic susceptibility tests and interpret the results to determine the antibiotic resistance profiles of microorganisms representative of clinical samples.

You will isolate bacterial and viral DNA/RNA from various sources, detecting specific viruses and bacteria using various PCR techniques as an example of virus and bacterial detection within medical microbiology.

You will gain an understanding of the objectives of the Year 2 mentoring programme for the Medical Diagnostics course through an introductory session with your mentor. You will also meet your mentor during a one-to-one meeting and submit a completed handover form (in advance).

Content

During the practical sessions, you will work on identifying micro-organisms in clinical samples using various tests. You will culture micro-organisms on selective media and carry out various biochemical tests and staining procedures. You will also determine the antibiotic susceptibility of the isolated micro-organisms. You will compile the results in a written report. In addition, you will isolate and examine the presence of bacterial and viral genetic material from various sources, and learn to apply various PCR techniques for detection.
