Learning outcomes
7. Medical Knowledge – Level 1
LOL 7.2 – MKE – N1 – VT/DT standard
The student has a command of both basic and advanced medical knowledge (anatomy, physiology, pathology and pharmacology) relating to the circulatory, respiratory, urinary, digestive, endocrine, nervous and immune systems, and can apply this knowledge to both simple and complex conditions affecting these systems.
Indicators
Description
7.1 Translates medical terminology and applies it (BN2030).
7.2 Identifies anatomical structures or locates them within the body and knows both their common and medical names (BN2030).
7.3 Explains physiological processes within the body (BN2030).
7.4 Identifies, in the context of pathology, the risk factors, causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, possible complications and prognosis of the clinical picture, and explains which underlying physiological processes have been disrupted (BN2030).
7.5 Explains what (additional) diagnostic methods entail (BN2030).
7.6 Explains, for a selected group of medicines, how they affect physiological processes (mechanism of action) and reasons why side effects may occur as a result (BN2030).
7.9 Relates the patient’s symptoms to the organ systems potentially involved (including the interrelationships between them) and explains the underlying (patho)physiology (BN2030).
Content
Medical Knowledge 2 focuses extensively on psychiatry and revisits the organ systems covered in Medical Knowledge 1, with the clinical pictures now being more complex and greater emphasis placed on the interrelationships between organ systems. Several times per term, there is a (group) contact session with the lecturer. The main aim of these sessions is to apply medical knowledge to practical nursing situations. Students prepare for these sessions and assessments through self-study. Recordings of lectures are also available for this purpose, with the emphasis on clarifying the most important and/or most difficult aspects of the relevant topic.
Topics covered (in depth):
- Circulatory system
- Respiratory system
- Urinary system
- Digestive system
- Endocrine system
- Nervous system
- Immune system
- Pharmacology
- Psychiatry
- Palliative care
Competence Mastery Level 1 (CBN, 2022)
Level 1 involves a moderately complex context, with the focus on the systematic acquisition and application of knowledge and skills. The nature of the task is structured.
Assessment:
The assessment consists of two digital multiple-choice exams. A pass mark must be achieved in both exams. The weighted average of the marks determines the final mark for the course. The second exam is more extensive and also includes questions on the material covered in the first exam. This exam therefore carries greater weight in the assessment.
