Learning outcomes

Area of Expertise and Learning Outcome(s)

7. Medical Knowledge – Level 1

LOL 7.1 – MKE – N1 – VT/DT standard

The student has a command of basic medical knowledge (anatomy, physiology, pathology and pharmacology) of the circulatory, respiratory, urinary, digestive, endocrine and nervous systems, the musculoskeletal system, the skin, the immune system, the reproductive system, and the subjects of pharmacology and oncology.

Indicators
Description

7.1 Translates medical terminology and applies it (BN2030).

7.2 Identifies anatomical structures or locates them within the body and knows both the Dutch and medical terminology (BN2030).

7.3 Explains physiological processes in the body (BN2030).

7.4 In the context of pathology, identifies the risk factors, causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, possible complications and prognosis of the clinical picture, and explains which underlying physiological processes have been disrupted (BN2030).

7.5 Explains what (additional) diagnostic methods entail (BN2030).

7.6 Explains, for a selected group of medicines, how they affect physiological processes (mechanism of action) and reasons why side effects may occur as a result (BN2030).

7.7 Explains the significance of the most common laboratory values in blood and urine, or when these values are measured, and explains the significance and clinical relevance of deviations from these values (BN2030).

7.8 Explains how a fluid balance is calculated and outlines the possible significance and clinical relevance of deviations in the fluid balance (BN2030).

Content

In Medical Knowledge Year 1, the normal structure (anatomy) and function (physiology) of the organ systems are covered, including clinical pictures (pathology) and medication (pharmacology). During the (partly interactive) lectures, the emphasis is on clarifying the most important and/or most difficult aspects of that week’s course material. During seminars, students actively engage with the topics themselves, with a strong focus on case studies and the application of this knowledge in practical nursing situations. Students prepare for the lessons through self-study.

Topics covered:

  • Circulatory system
  • Respiratory system
  • Urinary system
  • Digestive system
  • Endocrine system
  • Nervous system
  • Musculoskeletal system
  • Skin
  • Immune system
  • Reproductive system
  • Pharmacology
  • Oncology.

Competence Proficiency Level 1 (CBN, 2022)

At the first level, the context is of medium complexity, with the focus on the systematic acquisition and application of knowledge and skills. The nature of the task is structured.

Assessment:

The assessment consists of three digital multiple-choice exams. A pass mark must be achieved in all exams. The weighted average of all marks determines the final mark for the course. The second and third exams are more extensive and also include questions on the material covered in the first and/or second exam. These exams therefore carry greater weight in the calculation.

  • TEST 01 – MKE Year 1 VT

Evidence for assessment

Somatic Organ Systems 1

Individual assignment

Digital multiple-choice test

Somatic Organ Systems 2 and Regulation

Individual assignment

Digital multiple-choice test (with a number of questions on the new material and a number of questions on the material from Somatic Organ Systems 1).

Nervous System, Immune System and Reproduction

Individual assignment

Digital multiple-choice test. (Including questions on the new material, a number of questions on the material from Vegetative Organ Systems 1 and a number of questions on the material from Vegetative Organ Systems 2 and Regulation).
