Content

Society places high demands on professional conduct. Physiotherapists must demonstrate to clients and health insurers that their physiotherapeutic interventions are well substantiated from a scientific point of view. Physiotherapists are expected to examine and treat their patients in the best possible way. The physiotherapist's actions are based on the norms and values of the patient(s) concerned, the physiotherapist's clinical expertise, and the best available scientific evidence. Therefore, working according to these principles of evidence-based practice (EBP) is a must for every physiotherapist.
Research & Innovation 1 deals with the basic principles of applied scientific research. In this course, the investigative ability of students is stimulated: the student becomes acquainted with the EBP cycle and applies this method to a physiotherapeutic case. During the course, small groups will work on formulating research questions; searching scientific literature; assessing and interpreting this literature; organizing, summarizing, and displaying results in a fact sheet. The student will also gain knowledge about research designs and basic statistics. The course is concluded with a group assignment and an individual knowledge test. At the end of this course, the student has acquired basic knowledge about applied scientific research and gained experience with the EBP cycle. As a result of the course, the student can broadly understand and interpret research on physiotherapeutic treatment effects.
