The Bachelor degree programme Biology and Medical Laboratory Research comprises a programme of 240 ECTS credits (a first-year programme of 60 ECTS credits and a main phase programme of 180 ECTS credits).
The degree programme comprises a major and a minor. The major is composed of compulsory and elective units. The minor may be chosen by the student and allows him or her to specialise in a chosen field or to broaden his/her generic or subject-specific knowledge and skills.
The degree programme is practice-orientated: a work placement (30 ECTS credits) and other practical components form an essential and compulsory part of this programme, as does a thesis project (30 ECTS credits).

The degree programme equips the student with the competences required of a professional in the field of Biology and Medical Laboratory Research. These are:
- Research: the ability to conduct research that is either problem-solving or will lead to a greater understanding of a topic in their working environment.
- Experimentation: the ability to conduct experiments in the domain of Applied Science so as to obtain reliable research results.
- Administration and coordination: the ability to develop, implement and maintain a data management system, or components thereof, in the domain of Applied Science so that the system complies with relevant laws and regulations, quality standards and norms and values of the organisation.
- Consultancy and trading: the ability to give well-motivated advice on the design, development or application of products, processes and methods and will establish profitable operations with goods or services in the domain of Applied Science.
- Instruction, supervision, teaching and coaching: the ability to instruct and supervise employees and clients in learning new knowledge and skills in the domain of Applied Science.
- Governance and management: the ability to provide guidance and direction to organisational processes and the staff involved to achieve the goals of the organisational component or the project under his/her leadership.
- Self-management: the ability to motivate him or herself to improve how he/she works and grows to ensure that he/she stays abreast of new developments, including those related to ethical dilemmas and socially accepted norms and values.

This student has completed the Major Medical Diagnostics.
The major Medical Diagnostics includes additional work placements in different diagnostic laboratories in a hospital or health institute as an essential part. Graduates can carry out and interpret diagnostic assays, develop and implement diagnostic procedures, and perform patient-related research.
