- Motivic devices such as repetition, sequence, motivic transformation, embellishments
- Guidetone lines, compound lines
- Antecedent/Consequent Phrases
- Pitch Contour
- Basic principles of counterpoint

2) Harmonic subjects such as:
- Tonal, modal and chromatic harmony
- Modulations
- Inversions/Slash Chords (Hybrids)/Poly Chords
- Pedal Point/Ostinato
- Re-Harmonization

3) Rhythm considerations:
- Harmonic Rhythm
- Metric Modulation

4) Form:
- Jazz forms such as Blues, Rhythm changes, AABA, ABAC
- Apex, Range, Pitch Contour, Melodic tension
