Area of Expertise and Learning Outcome(s)

8. Skills lab education – Level 1

LOL 8.5 – SLO – N1

The student applies methods, based on clinical reasoning, for risk assessment, problem identification and intervention whilst performing nursing technical skills on patients whose vital signs are compromised, and is subsequently able to report and hand over the care efficiently, effectively and methodically.

Indicators
Description

8.13 Carries out (reserved and high-risk) procedures aimed at patients whose vital signs are compromised (BN2030).

8.14 Works in accordance with standards, guidelines and protocols aimed at patients whose vital signs are compromised and is able to deviate from these in a responsible manner (BN2030).

8.15 Takes into account the wishes and needs of the patient whose life is at risk and their next of kin when acting (BN2030).

8.16 Identifies underlying basic principles from, amongst others, anatomy, physiology, psychology, pathology and pharmacology, focusing on the patient whose life is at risk (BN2030).

8.17 Identifies the objectives, (contra)indications and complications of the nursing interventions carried out (BN2030).

8.18 Applies methods for risk assessment, early detection, problem identification, intervention and monitoring (BN2030).

8.19 Is able to report, consult and hand over information efficiently and effectively regarding patients whose lives are at risk (BN2030).

8.20 Describes the ability to assess the consequences of one’s own actions in relation to the emergence of unsafe situations when caring for patients whose lives are at risk (BN2030).

8.21 Works in the care of patients whose lives are at risk in accordance with guidelines on safety policy and infection prevention, privacy, ergonomics, economics and ecology (BN2030).

Content

In skills lab education, the emphasis is on learning and mastering various nursing skills from a holistic and person-centred perspective, underpinned by theoretical principles. Students work in accordance with protocols, guidelines and quality standards, and develop the ability to deviate from these, where necessary, in a conscious and reasoned manner, based on the context and the wishes of the care recipient.

This course covers recognising signs of a life-threatening condition, carrying out appropriate interventions and collaborating within the care team in acute situations. Through e-learning modules, instructional lessons and scenario-based training, students work specifically on their own development. Students receive feedback on their attitude, communication and technical procedures during training in a simulated setting or whilst undertaking workplace learning.

Topics that may be covered:

  • In-depth study of reserved procedures
  • Clinical reasoning
  • First aid and BLS
  • Use of nursing communication models and reasoning tools (such as ABCDE, (M)EWS, SBAR)

Competence Mastery Level 1 (CBN, 2022)

At the first level, the context is of medium complexity, with the focus on the methodical application of knowledge and skills in accordance with guidelines and protocols in varying but similar situations. The nature of the task is structured, involving the application of familiar methods.

Students learn to manage their own learning (self-direction) in terms of planning, motivation and reflection. Reflection is aimed at knowledge and understanding, with a focus on innovation.

The guidance provided is aimed at fostering increasing self-direction.

Assessment:

At the end of the course, there is a skills assessment in which knowledge, attitude and competence are demonstrated. The assessment is graded and must be a pass (5.5 or higher).
